Virtueel Museum, enjoying contemporary art is still possible - p 63

This is the fourth chapter about surrealism today. Virtual Museum is different from any other website. We do search for the most beautiful fine arts to find on the internet, at the same time also original, individual. Since Max Ernst (regarded as the greatest surrealist painter ever) made his collages with cuttings from old engravings, a barrier has been crossed: these works are no longer made by only one artist, art from predecessors has been used. Then where lays the value and originality of his surrealistic collages? The value is specified by what Max Ernst did add to the other artists’ cuttings. As result of his combinations he created a surrealistic mood, which was not present in the engravings he did use. Also some contemporary artists make use of the work of predecessors, sometimes art work has been created specially for this purpose. (For instance objects made in 3D programs). But the whole creates a new form of beauty, a specific mood, and that’s why one can find such kind of work in Virtual Museum (between others). We also don’t mind to present the work of known (and expensive) artists beside the unknown,  whom perhaps did not made their first step to a gallery or maybe are even refused by galleries. If a work is beautiful, if it can touch us and creates something new, it is of equal value to us. But please judge yourself.
