Virtual Museum, for impassioned contemporary art, p 4

The chapter on this page is paintings, between abstract and figurative. When the abstract painting was rising fast in Europe, certain galleries connected the idea of progress in the evolution of mankind, to an evolution in the history of art, evolving from figurative to abstract, with as a device “the deliverance from figuration”. Also some painters, such as Kandinsky, cooperated for the spreading of this Eurocentric idea. The indignation was enormous when shortly afterwards surrealism, originally abstract, also accepted figurative painters to their group. Max Ernst painted both, but Dali or Magritte ware explicit figurative painters and very precise too. Their success overgrew quickly the abstract ones.  Today both the figurative and abstract art of painting are flourishing and moreover some painters are difficult to put in the right category. For instance they show some weak figuration, or the figures are so stylised they became forms on themselves, form for the form. Or there is depth in the work as if some bodies are depicted, but we cannot recognise these forms in our daily lifes… This is subject to this chapter.
