Virtual Museum, for contemporary art with feeling, p 7

Optical illusions in art is not a recent feature. The trompe-l'oeil was very popular in baroque time, mainly used for ceilings, sometimes also to replace statues. But also in paintings it was used. Giuseppe Arcimboldo with his faces made of fruits and vegetables is very known. Later it was used again by surreal artists such as Dali of Magritte. The graphic artist Esher is one of the most popular artists of all time. (Read more on this subject in the "History of modern art")
