This hospital is a design from the architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner.
For the moment it is under reconstruction and at the same time still a hospital.
The monastery of Montserrat is not authentic. It has already been plundered and destroyed by the French in 1812
and there was a fire in the 20th century. The buildings today are from the 19th and the 20th century.
The entrance of the church is even form 1968, but it’s done very beautifully. Only the place of the Black Madonna is from the 15th century.
The massif of Montserrat has a diversity of forms that inspires the imagination
The ermitage Sant-Joan did surely already exist in the 16th century, build in a fold in the rocks
Montserrat: entrance of the church
The boys choir Escolania exist from the 12th century. Here, at 13 pm, they are singing the Virolai and the Salve Regina
From this service a fragment is to see and listen to. Since it has been filmed with stretching
the arms high in the air, to reach higher then a few thousands of people, it is shaking.
Meanwhile some pilgrims go on with their tour in the ambulatory, kissing the sphere of the Black Madonna (see on top of the choir).
After the service
The entrance of the ambulatory. The earlier so crowded chuch was now nearly empty.
A very fair combination of old and new
This statue is responsible for the popularity of Montserrat: the Black Virgin (la Moreneta).
To catholic tradition it was carved by Saint Luke around 50 AD and had been hidden in a cave until it was rediscovered in 880 AD.
According to historians it dates from the 12th century. (The veneration of the Virgin Mary dates from later times
as a compromise of the Church after not having succeeded in exterminating the veneration of goddesses.)
The statue should have become dark out of itself, there are some hypotheses how. It is now protected by glass,
an opening makes it possible to the pilgrims to kiss the sphere in her hand.
The room of prayer, a window shows the back of the Black Virgin.
