Lanzarote 2013 - part 10

La Geria

Viticulture of Lanzarote: an example of going together of man and nature. Before the vulcanic explosions
in the 17th and 18th century this area of Lanzarote was famous for its fertile soil.
It was this same area that became covered with lava, as a result of which the population of Lanzarote drastically diminuated.
Now the wine farmers digg holes to reach the former fertile soul. The vulcanic grains are holding the water.
The walls of vulcanic bricks protect the plants against the wind and catch the wet in the sea winds at the same time.
