The neighbourhood of the Cogels-Osylei, Antwerp Berchem
The neighbourhood of the Cogels-Osylei (a part of the district Zurenborg), including the Waterloostraat,
the Transvaalstraat and the Generaal van Merlenstraat, is a piece of the Art Nouveau heritage of Antwerp
which has survived all demolition attempts. The Church as well as the industry did go on making war to destroy
all Art Nouveau. To the Church the style was too frivolous and to paganish. The industry regarded it to be the
enemies of standard production, because Art Nouveau was aimed on employment and crafts. But the
neighbourhood has campaigned to preserve the houses, so they did survive all attempts to demolishing.
Each tourist visiting Antwerp should pay them a visit. The place is easy to reach with the train.
There are many trains from Antwerpen Centraal to Antwerpen Berchem, it takes five minutes,
and the area lies just beside the station. We start with a house in German woodwork, combined with neoclassicism.

At the opposite side of the railway are more humble Art Nouveau or Art Deco houses,
often polluted and sometimes dilapidated.
