UNESCO World Heritage Site for the late 15th century icons and frescoes of Dionisiy. Founded by Ferapont in 1398,
expanded by Martinian in the 15th century and under the patronage of the Moscow Grand Princes and later Tsars.
The Kirillo-Belozerskiy Monastery is located at the shores of Lake Siverskoye. With an outer belt of ramparts of more than 2 km
and for example 11 churches within the walls, it is the largest monastery in Europe. It was founded by the monk Kirill in 1397,
supported by the authorities of the emerging Grand Duchy of Muscovy. In the 15th – 17th century, the monastery grew into the largest fortress in Northern Russia,
and the third largest landowner in Russia (after the Tsar and the Lavra of Sergiyev Posad, seat of the Moscow Patriarch).
Ivan the Terrible had a cell of his own and planned to enter it as a monk at the end of his life. It successfully withstood sieges in the Time of Troubles.
In the 17th century it became the last place of exile of the once powerful patriarch Nikon. Part of the territory within the walls has been converted back into an active monastery.
