The ruins of the abbey of Villers-la-Ville (1/4)

The abbey of Villers-la-Ville was founded in the 12th century by monks of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux.
In the 13th century it was completely reconstructed. The abbey had in that time around hundred monks and
three times as much lay brothers. The domain was a ten thousend hectares large, spread out from
Anvers to Namur, with abbey farms. After conflicts in the 16th and 17th century the abbey enjoyed
again a golden period until the French revolution put an end on it and sold the abbey to a
merchant in building materials. The present restoration works started in 1984.
On the left the refectory of the monks.
